Advocacy

Located in Michigan's capital city, Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM), monitors state and federal legislation that might impact Michigan's 76 Habitat for Humanity affiliates on topics as diverse as affordable housing, construction codes, taxes and fundraising.

Michigan's legislators have been very supportive of Habitat in Michigan, and a majority volunteer locally on builds in their respective communities. They also participate in HFHM's Legislative Builds, which take place roughly every three years and bring elected officials, their families, affiliates and volunteers together for a shared experience and purpose.

A few of the laws that impact Habitat affiliates are:

  • Secure and Fair Enforcement Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (SAFE Act), 06/30/11
  • Transfer of nonprofit housing property from charitable nonprofit housing organization to low-income person: PA 340,  12/21/10
  • Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act, 07/16/10
  • Real and Personal Property Tax Exemptions for ReStores: PA 109, 07/19/10
  • Exempting certain nonprofit owned residential property from taxation: PA 612, 01/03/07
