Governor Granholm and Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford to Headline Habitat Awards Banquet

LANSING – Over 400 supporters of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM) will put down their hammers and don business attire to welcome Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Habitat International CEO Jonathan Reckford to Habitat’s 14th Annual Awards Banquet Tuesday, March 23, at Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing. The event, which begins with a 5 p.m. reception, will feature Governor Granholm as a speaker and honor Habitat Michigan’s 2010 award recipients.

Habitat for Humanity of Michigan President Ken Bensen says Michigan is making steady progress toward reducing poverty housing. According to Bensen, “In 2009, volunteers built or rehabbed 235 Michigan homes in partnership with people in need. And over the last 25 years, HFHM has brought simple, decent housing to 3,225 families. This record of achievement would not have been possible without thousands of volunteers, local affiliates, and generous sponsors.”

Earlier this year, HFHM launched its “First Family Builds” program. This ambitious initiative invites Michiganians to join Governor Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern in giving back to build a better state. Over 200 builds are scheduled throughout Michigan this year.

Habitat for Humanity of Michigan is the state support organization for Michigan’s 77 Habitat for Humanity affiliates which serve every county in the state. HFHM’s mission is to increase the capacity of Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Michigan to build or renovate simple, decent homes in partnership with people in need.
