We have a rewarding opportunity for a proven, values-driven nonprofit fundraising professional who is highly motivated to work collaboratively in pursuit of big goals and achieving our mission. We are looking for a passionate Major Gift Officer to join our energetic, Traverse City based team.

We have been helping low- and moderate-income families earn homeownership for 38 years. Now we need you to help us expand our program to serve more people in the community.

The Major Gift Officer along with the support of the Fund Development and Campaign Leadership committee, is responsible for overall execution of the multi-million-dollar vision over the next five years to support the programs of Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region.

Applicants must be results-oriented and committed to our goal of increasing our homebuilding and home repair capacity. Ability to communicate our mission, goals, and successes to a wide range of potential donors and strong interpersonal skills are required.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Major Gift Officer will work with the Fund Development Committee to steer an established fundraising program that builds donor relationships through effective discovery, cultivation, and stewardship activities. The Major Gift Officer is supported by an accomplished communications and community engagement team to reach development goals. The Major Gift Officer is responsible to solicit major and planned gifts as well as manage a grant program.

Monday to Friday - Some evenings and weekends. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the personal solicitation program of Habitat GTR by working with the fundraising team to develop annual personal solicitation goals. 
  2. Secure major gifts between the $5,000 to $100,000 levels from private foundations, families, and other organizations to raise at least $400,000 annually.
  3. Grow and manage a portfolio of between 100 and 125 donors and prospects.
  4. Write effective case statements, individualized grant proposals, and personalized notes and letters for the organization.  
  5. Manage Habitat GTR’s moves management workflows and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects. Coach other staff to ensure the quality of the major and mid-level giving programs.
  6. Track and report monthly progress to the CEO on all major and mid-level giving efforts.
  7. Manage major gift stewardship efforts to ensure that all major donors are properly thanked and understand the impact of their giving through impact reports or grant reports in Ensure that all major donors are thanked.
  8. Chair the Campaign Leadership committee on developing strategies, training and updates to the board.  
  9. Ensure that Habitat GTR’s follows its fundraising policies, AFP Code of Ethics, and fundraising regulations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Work closely with the Director of Marketing on developing multi-channel fundraising and donor engagement collateral, along with executing annual giving activities. 
  2. Run effective meetings for fundraising staff and for board fundraising activities.
  3. Attend monthly staff meetings and other assigned meetings and trainings.
  4. Prepares monthly written reports to the CEO and presentations to the Board as requested.
  5. Represent HFHGTR always in a positive and professional manner when working with your team as well as the community partners, donors, partner families, volunteers, etc.  Must have commitment to the Habitat mission and uphold its values and ethics.
Qualifications
  1. Commitment to the Habitat mission and upholding its values and ethics.
  2. Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  3. At least three years of professional non-event fundraising experience, preferably in major gift programs.
  4. Track record of building relationships and successfully securing gifts of $5,000 and above. 
  5. Superior written communication skills.
  6. Effective team collaboration skills. 
  7. Detailed-oriented.
  8. Competently work in donor management and CRM system. 
  9. Comfort with accountability with metrics.  
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence, with an ability to develop and maintain long-term, productive relationships internally and externally.

The Major Gift Officer will coordinate with the Director of Operations who is responsible for the Business Operations and policies, and with the Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for justifying the impact and performance of the organization to the board and aligning the direction and future strategy of the organization.  Other assigned duties may be delegated by the Chief Executive Officer.
