Over 450 supporters of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM) put down their hammers March 23 and donned business attire to salute Habitat Michigan’s 2010 award recipients. Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Jonathon Reckford, Habitat for Humanity International CEO, attended as speakers.

Habitat Michigan would like to thank and recognize its 2010 award recipients:

2009 Affiliate of the Year AwardBay County Habitat for Humanity
2009 Public Official of the Year AwardState Representative John Proos
2009 Sponsor of the Year AwardDow Chemical Company
2009 Bernice R. Bensen Service AwardReverend Gary Dawes
2009 Volunteers of the YearIndividuals recognized by their affiliates for outstanding service to Habitat

At the banquet, HFHM officially launched its 2010 “First Family Builds” initiative, an accelerated construction event that invites Michiganians to join Governor Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern in building a better state.

There are over 200 builds scheduled, giving us all a fantastic opportunity to get involved in our own neighborhoods and cities. Contact your local Habitat affiliate and ask them for a list of the builds in your region. Then reach out to your brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and co-workers and ask them to join you in an effort to change the lives of Michigan citizens by volunteering on a build.

HFHM thanked the First Family for its commitment to Habitat and presented Governor Granholm with a pink toolbelt to carry her hammer.

Gov. Granholm commented, "What has to happen for Michigan requires all hands on deck. People need to be empowered to build their own real estate, which is Michigan. We're calling all citizens to roll up their sleeves, to strap on their toolbelts. We have to build a new foundation for our state. I want to thank you all for rolling up your sleeves for our habitat -- Michigan."
