AmeriCorps

Michigan AmeriCorpsAmeriCorps is a national service program providing Americans of all ages and backgrounds community service opportunities in exchange for educational credit. Each year, thousands of AmeriCorps members provide assistance at over 2,000 nonprofits, community agencies, and faith-based organizations across the United States. AmeriCorps members help organizations accomplish more and make more effective use of volunteers.

Established in 2000, Michigan Habitat AmeriCorps significant achievements include:

  • Provided over 60,000 service hours
  • Built 281 homes housing approximately 1,300 people
  • Generated over 15,000 volunteers serving almost 93,000 volunteer hours
  • Provided the state of Michigan with a new property tax base of over $300,000
AmeriCorps members

Habitat for Humanity of Michigan enrolls full-time, part-time and summer time AmeriCorps members to serve Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the state. Members provide service in three classifications:

  • Construction Liaison
    • Members serve to ensure the training, the safety practices and the overall satisfaction of volunteers on a construction site.
  • Volunteer Coordinator
    • Members serve to form partnerships between their affiliate and local business, industry, service groups, churches and/or community individuals.
  • Family Support
    • Members serve to create systems, mentors and programs to better able Habitat's partner families to become self-sufficient and responsible homeowners.

AmeriCorps Signature Service Projects

AmeriCorps members from all AmeriCorps Programs in Michigan gather together for one day annuallly to perform a service project together. The 2003 Signature Service Project was hosted by Michigan Habitat's AmeriCorps Program. Approximately 300 AmeriCorps members traveled to Battle Creek, Michigan to blitz build four Habitat for Humanity houses in one day. Additional projects included landscaping, rehabbing and park restoration.

The 2003 project was so successful that Michigan Habitat's AmeriCorps Program was selected to host the Signature Service Project in 2004 and 2005.
