State Legislators Help Build Lansing House for Family of 12

Habitat for Humanity Lansing hosts “Legislators Building Communities Day”

Habitat for Humanity Lansing hosted Rep. Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) and Rep. Joan Bauer (D-Lansing, Ingham County) on Sept. 9, where the lawmakers helped nail siding and build a home at 3301 Danbury Crossroad, Lansing.

Reps. Bauer and Byrum volunteered alongside members of the homeowner family, the construction crew and community volunteers. The Lansing property is a six-bedroom, two-story home being constructed for, and in partnership with, a family of twelve.

Rep. Bauer spoke to volunteers saying, "The work of Habitat is so very important to the health and vibrancy of our community as it results in affordable housing for families and strengthens and stabilizes our neighborhoods. It is important that legislators experience "hands on" satisfaction of working together with community volunteers and families to actually build a house. I so enjoy being involved in the legislative build every year and commend Habitat for Humanity for their good work!"

Says Rep. Byrum, “It truly is an honor to be able to volunteer alongside residents from the community and raise awareness for affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization projects across our state. I specifically would like to thank Habitat for Humanity for making this possible and assure them that what I have experienced today will be reflected in my work in Lansing."

Over half of Michigan's legislature has participated in the summer initiative "Legislators Building Communities," (LBC) which engages and educates legislators and community members on the issues of affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization in an effort to raise legislators' awareness of the needs in their community and efforts that are currently underway to address those needs.

Legislators Building Communities is an initiative of the Living in Michigan Coalition. For more information on the LBC, please visit www.legislatorsbuildingcommunities.org.
