Lansing, MI – Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM) received $100,000 in grant funding from the DTE Energy Foundation to support HFHM’s Sustainable Housing Program and Leadership Development.
“Support from DTE Energy Foundation drives environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, and social equity in Michigan communities,” says Thom Phillips, Sustainable Housing Director for HFHM. “The Sustainable Housing Program fosters the development of experts and leaders in high performance affordable housing. Low-income and veteran families who partner with Habitat to build, rehabilitate, or upgrade their homes benefit from this expertise with healthy, safe, durable, accessible, and incredibly energy efficient housing. We are grateful for DTE Energy Foundation’s generosity and appreciate that they also give back to their communities by volunteering with Habitat.”
Previous DTE Energy Foundation funding sponsored subject matter expert and leadership training, coaching, and mentorship opportunities across the state. Habitat sustainable housing leaders have received awards from Habitat for Humanity International, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Governor’s Energy Excellence Awards, and others. The leaders also serve as subject matter experts for many other housing organizations.
“This grant funding has affected the way we build which far exceeds code building,” says Sandy Pearson, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. “The way Habitat for Humanity develops housing in Michigan keeps money in the pockets of our partner families that they may use toward other needs such as food and medicine to better live according to their budgets. We are also better with environmental considerations. It has been our goal to use this funding to set the standard in the building industry and serve as a leader.”
“The DTE Energy Foundation is proud to be a Habitat for Humanity sponsor,” said Lynette Dower, president of the DTE Energy Foundation. “Creating homes that serve as the center point for a family’s story while ensuring that the houses are energy efficient and safe means that these families can focus on making memories rather than housing insecurity.”
This is the seventh year DTE Energy Foundation has partnered with HFHM supporting the housing programs. In addition to financial support from the DTE Energy Foundation, DTE Energy volunteers spent 2300 of hours volunteering with local Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout Michigan in 2018 alone.
Thanks to the DTE Energy Foundation’s support of the work of Habitat for Humanity, families will continue to benefit from resource-efficient homes that are safe, healthy, secure, durable, accessible, comfortable, decent, and affordable.
