Building Together for Michigan

Michigan’s Legislative Habitat Build Day

Monday, August 18, 2026  |  Habitat Build sites across Michigan

On August 18, Habitat for Humanity affiliates across Michigan will invite state legislators to roll up their sleeves and build alongside Habitat volunteers and partner families. It’s a statewide day of service, a chance for the people who shape housing policy to experience affordable homeownership firsthand.

ABOUT THE EVENT

What Is Legislative Habitat Build Day?

Legislative Habitat Build Day is a coordinated statewide initiative organized by Habitat for Humanity of Michigan and our local affiliate network. Each year, we invite Michigan state legislators to join us at Habitat build sites in their own communities for a day of hands-on service alongside the families we build with.

Habitat for Humanity partners with families who contribute hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” and purchase their home through an affordable mortgage. Volunteers, community members, and now legislators all play a part in making that possible.

No construction experience is needed. Our site staff guide every participant through the work, making it accessible and meaningful for everyone who shows up.

WHY IT MATTERS

Affordable Housing Is One of Michigan’s Most Pressing Challenges

Across Michigan, families are struggling to find housing that is safe, stable, and within their reach. The gap between what families can afford and what the housing market offers continues to grow. Habitat’s work addresses that gap, one home and one family at a time.

Events like Legislative Build Day matter because they create a direct connection between policy and people. When legislators work alongside the families they serve, they return to their offices with a clearer picture of what affordable housing means in practice and what solutions are already working in their communities.

FOR LEGISLATORS

We’d Love to Have You Build With Us

If you are a Michigan state legislator, we invite you to spend a morning or afternoon at your local Habitat build site on August 18. This is an opportunity to connect with volunteers and a Habitat partner family, to see the work up close, and to demonstrate your commitment to affordable housing in your district.
